Travelling Safely in South Africa

Good to know before you go

South Africa is a beautiful country, and most visits are completely trouble-free. Even Nadine has survived it: in three years, she's had just one run-in with the police (which may or may not have been her fault) 🙂, and it was quickly resolved 💸. Like anywhere, South Africa has its own way of doing things. Locals follow a few simple habits that keep every journey relaxed. Here's what we'd tell a good friend.

Plan your journey
  • Travel in daylight. Rural roads are unlit, the sun sets around 18:00 in April, and the reserve gates close at 18:00. Plan to arrive at the venue by 17:00.
  • We drive on the left. Take a few minutes in the airport car park to get used to it.
  • Bring the right licence. With a Swiss licence, you may also need an International Driving Permit (IDP). Check this with your rental company.
  • Share your live location with Nadine or Egan while you drive.
  • Fill up in town. At fuel stations, an attendant fills your car for you, and a small tip is customary.
On the road
  • Keep doors locked and windows closed while driving, even in traffic.
  • Keep valuables out of sight. Put bags in the boot before you set off, not when you arrive. Keep your phone off your lap and the dashboard.
  • Stay alert at traffic lights. Leave space to the car in front so you can drive away if needed.
  • Traffic lights not working? Treat the intersection as a four-way stop: first to arrive goes first. This happens during power cuts.
  • Watch for potholes, pedestrians, animals and minibus taxis. Taxis often stop suddenly.
If something goes wrong
  • Damaged tyre from rocks or debris on the road? Don't stop right there. Objects are sometimes placed on roads deliberately. Turn on your hazard lights and drive slowly to the nearest busy, well-lit place, such as a fuel station or shopping centre. A damaged wheel can be replaced.
  • Before you stop, look around. If people are close to your car, keep going a little further.
  • Politely decline help from strangers. Call your rental company's roadside assistance instead.
  • A police car signals you to stop? Turn on your hazard lights and give a hand signal to show you've seen them. Then drive calmly, within the speed limit, to the nearest police station, the venue, or a busy public place before stopping. You can call 10111 to confirm it's a real police vehicle.
  • If you are ever confronted, stay calm and cooperate. Things can be replaced. You can't.
Around town and the airport
  • Use ATMs inside malls or the airport, and decline offers of help at the machine.
  • Notice if a car seems to follow you from the airport. If it does, don't drive to your accommodation. Go to a police station or a busy public place.
  • Leave jewellery and expensive cameras packed away when you're out and about.
  • Car guards in reflective vests watch parked cars. A small tip when you leave is customary.
At the game reserve
  • Dinokeng is home to wild animals. Stay in your vehicle and keep your windows closed near animals.
  • Keep your gate ticket and have it stamped at reception when you check in.
  • Gate opening times: 06:00 to 18:00.

Emergency numbers (save these to your phone)

  • Police10111
  • Ambulance10177
  • Emergency from any mobile112
  • Venue: Maria, LaLula Wedding Venue+27 82 574 1584
  • Your rental company's roadside assistancesee your rental papers

Please don't let this worry you. Thousands of visitors enjoy South Africa every day. A little preparation means you can relax and enjoy the trip. If you're unsure about anything, just ask us. We're happy to help.
